So it turns out that if my default video sink is "XWindows (X11/XShm/Xv)", the
test button says "Failed to construct test pipeline for 'XWindows (X11/XShm/Xv)'".

However, if I change the sink to "XWindows (No Xv)", then the test button works,
and Totem starts up without crashing. (I haven't tried -playing- anything yet,
but it's still a much better situation.)

Now, Breezy Colony 5's installation set this default, during an install on a
formatted disk. The only change I made to my xorg.conf was to add the DontZap
option to the ServerFlags, so I'd argue that the installer should have gotten
this right in the first place. The question is, why didn't it? Is there some
way it could have figured out that Xv wouldn't work?

I can attach whatever other files you might need to debug this. Tnx!
