Thanks.  Enabling security updates for universe fixed my problem.  To do so,
I added the following line to my sources.list:

    deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security universe

I found information about doing this at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuHowCome
in section "Working with Programs: Installing and Uninstalling".

There is a comment in my sources.list about enabling universe, *but* it says
nothing about enabling the universe security repository.  It would be nice if
such a comment were added.

Is there someone I should contact to suggest this?
