Thanks for the bug report. There's a long thread of ideas on the very topic on
http://bugs.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=141963 - Ubuntu won't likely divert from
their decision, but if it makes life easier you can also type  /<text>  instead
of Ctrl-F, which is the default behaviour of Firefox too. Sorry, marking as NOTABUG.
