Also, hald is an unprivileged process; it should not be able to completely
freeze the system. In Hoary hal causes a freeze when attempting to detect your
CD-ROM, that's why I asked whether you enabled DMA.
If the system does not completely freeze in Breezy, can you please call "top"
and check whether there is any process that pegs the CPU?
