Oh, it does! hal now has:

udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_8ca_20_noserial_if0_logicaldev_input'
[...]
  info.capabilities = {'input', 'input.tablet', 'input.mouse', 'input.keyboard'}
(string list)
[...]

so it correctly detected your tablet now.

:-( I even chanched the the permissions to 666.

Argh, please don't. Please change it back to 0640, currently you have a major
hole in your system.

Hal now seems to work fine. Can you please do the gnome-volume-manager debugging
again?
