Ok, I've tracked it down, given that lpi code:

247             item = gtk_action_create_menu_item (action);
248             gtk_menu_shell_insert (GTK_MENU_SHELL (helpmenu), item, position++);

line #248 emits this assertion failure. Still checking why.
