Using Gnumeric version 1.5.90-1ubuntu1, rotated text is not displayed.

To reproduce :
 - type text in a cell
 - scale the cell to make it bigger
 - choose Format Cells in context menu
 - choose Alignment tab
 - set the angle to any value different of 0
 - apply : the text disappears

I've noticed that by opening a document about 1 month old. It makes my document
pretty useless...
