I forgot to mention that I'm on Breezy, i386. This desktop PC started as a Warty
preview, then early to Hoary (five weeks or so before release) and then early to
Breezy (a month or so before release). There's probably lots of crud on here,
but I've recently run debfoster to remove old, unconnected stuff and have
ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-base installed. Other potential differences including
having Dennis Kaarsemaker's FreeNX package and a lot of edubuntu pieces (but not
edubuntu-artwork). I temporarily uninstalled FreeNX, but the problem remained.
