I have noticed a similar problem but without tabs and spaces.
I added a SMB printer and the ppd file for a LaserJet-3P-w/-PCL5 using
gnome-cups-manager. gnome-cups-manager created the file LaserJet-3P-w/-PCL5.ppd
in the /etc/cups/ppd directory. The printer itself is named similarly. I'm not
sure if it is the "/" or what, but this printer will not be responsive until the
printer is renamed to something simple (like LaserJet3P) and the ppd file
renamed accordingly. (cupsys should also be restarted).
At that point, all is well.
