Hi Matt. Sorry I probably should have closed this one. The question moved to the
ubuntu forums (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=18319) then it
eventually got answered on (http://www.monkeysaudio.com/smf/index.php?topic=1696.0)

...though the solution:

"i have no idea why 3.99 file formats were not backwards compatible, but
whatever... i managed to get it 3.99 encoded files working w/ gst just build the
MAC lib from http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/mac-port/ for linux (there is a
3.99 there) then build the libgstmonkeysaudio.so using the monkeys audio plugin
from the gstreamer website. after the build, just swap out the .a that is built
within that pkg w/ the one you built from the sourceforge site. the output
libgstmonkeysaudio.so will be compiled with the 3.99, and all will be good. im
listening to 3.99 apes right now w/ gstreamer :-) "

... is just slightly beyond my grasp and skills (ok, I'm no tool), so I'm still
not able to play my 500gb of lossless audio on any of the linux boxes (yes there
is still one windows box - "getting rid of the windows box" is going to be the
title of the next research project). I should really convert all 500gb to flac
(which works fine), but flac uses sooooo much more disk space. Anyway, anything
for the cause.

Go ahead and close it. Maybe I should ask a MOTU to fix it and add this to
universe? -Tim
