No, it doesn't seem to happen on small files, but it does happen very regularly
when transferring large files (100+ megs). I only need to do such a large file
about once per week, but it's happened each time I've done it for the last three
weeks and I end up killing Nautilus.

I'm not sure if this info will actually help, but if there's anything I can do
to provide more info, just ask. I'm not a coder, but am happy to contribute any
way I can. :o)
