Hello,
Since several weeks I could not burn any CD-R or CD-rw to save my datas. At the
moment where I would click on the 'burn' button, once the files in the CD
creator window, the message 'Fail creating image file - Wrong encoding chain
caracter' would appear systematically. I did a research day after day, until
yesterday when I suddenly got the idea to watch the content of a sub-repertory
of my home, not just with the graphic interface, but with a 'ls -l' on the
repertory.
And I discovered several backup files that where not visible in the GUI, and
were apart from their parent file, moved for classifying, in other folders.

I came to that strange idea as I had tried to burn small amounts of data at a
time, and noticed some folders could allow the burn starting, and some not.
Then, one that would allow the burn process starting if I selected it's content
dit not allow the burn process to start if I would select the complete folder
instead of selecting it's internal content.

That's why I suddenly wondered 'but what's in this one folder that prevents me
from burning the whole "Documents" folder ? (and this one in it) and that's how
I discovered that some text documents, and one file from a OpenOffice.org writer
document had autogenerated backup files that could not be seen in the graphical
interface, and not even when activating the 'display hidden files' option.

So, I wanted to report this, as not only other people could get the same kind of
trouble, once they will start to move files to and fro to class them
differently, or will suppress certain files they don't need anymore, and the
result is hidden backup files that are orphans, and following, 'wrong encoding
caracter chain' error messages, impossibility to recover datas from archieves...

I wondered if it would be more appropriate to report it here, or to Gnome, as it
is a fail in the interface, after all, but I finally decided to report it here,
as it concerns a vital aspect in good functionment for Ubuntu, as natively the
nautilus-cd-record function is the only one available to burn CD's.
At the end, yesterday, I had checked all my folders with 'ls -l' command lines,
found several hidden backup files that where not in the same folder as their
parent file, moved them to the right place, suppressed one that didn't have the
corresponding file existing anymore, and finally succeeded burning all the datas
perfectly, under their original shape and under .tar.bz2 archieve with file
roller. I could get the datas back on another computer perfectly just after, also.
It would be nice, though, to get all autogenerated backup files visible in the
GUI, such as in other distributions.
Best greetings, J.M.
