Apparently, stopping and restarting g-v-m was all it took - once I 
did that, it started working The Right Way all-of-a-sudden.

BTW, doing "g-v-m 2>&1" etc as written on the above mentioned page 
gives this error: "gnome-volume-manager: Ambiguous redirect"
