Ubuntu | gnome-volume-manager

Summary: vfat volumes are mounted w/ utf8
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: gnome-volume-manager
        AssignedTo: martin.pitt at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: andrew+ubuntu at jorgensenfamily.us
         QAContact: desktop-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

Removable volumes (like usb disks) using FAT filesystems are mounted with utf8
as their charset, which is not recommended. The driver complains:

FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will
be case sensitive!

This happens because it is the default for pmount in a UTF8 locale. I suppose
this could be considered a pmount bug, rather than a gnome-volume-manager bug,
but that is for the maintainers to decide. This bug could cause problems when
moving the volume back to a Windows platform.
