hmm...  just checked, and gstreamer-properties shows alsa as my default sink (as
does the /system/gstreamer/0.8/default/audiosink gconf key).

gnome sounds still sound terrible, though, even though running
gst-launch-0.8 filesrc location="/usr/share/sounds/startup.wav" ! wavparse !
alsasink
sounds fine.

so either gnome is not using gstreamer, or it's not picking up on my sink
setting....

also, last time i was trying to use polypaudio, I got no gnome sounds at all,
has this bug (#6696) been fixed yet upstream (no new polypaudio uploads since
then, so not yet fixed in ubuntu)?
