My external hdd (actually mp3 player) displays all uppercase directories as all
lowercase.

This is what mount says: /dev/sda1 on /media/IHP-100 type vfat
(rw,nosuid,nodev,quiet,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)
