Well, I don't have the lockup anymore since I configured the sound to use ALSA+dmix.
Since gnome-terminal and gedit produces a sound-event when you paste;
gnome-panel when you launch an app.
This leads me to think that it was not a bug, perhaps a misconfiguration of ESD
that locked it up.
