$ lshal | grep label
lshal version 0.5.2
udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_'
  info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_'  (string)
  volume.label = 'Ubuntu LiveCD'  (string)


If there are no CD in the drive, volume.label is not present in the output of lshal.
