I run KDE, but it's possible that I've run other Gnome apps as root under KDE. 
I've certainly run Synaptic that way.  sudo doesn't set $HOME, so it's also
possible that those apps would create /home/msl/.thumbnails, rather than
/root/.thumbnails.

Please feel free to reject the bug if you believe that this is the cause.
