'madman2k', could you please:
run gdb gnome-settings-daemon, and type 'break gdk_x_error' (answer yes to the
question that pops up), then 'run --sync'
type 'bt' when it breaks to see where it dies
post the log here

i guess this only shows up in xkl because xlib is CLEVAR and buffers for us
