Quick question for someone with the time to replicate this, what state is the
applet in when it hangs?

[davyd at tc35 ~]$ ps aux | grep multiload-applet
davyd 23096 0.8 0.6 20796 7192 ? S 14:13 0:02
/usr/libexec/multiload-applet-2
                                               ^
                                             state

That said, I'm not sure what multiload/libgtop would be doing trying to stat
that directory (actually, it may be trying to determine free disk space). Does
gnome-system-monitor work when it is hung?
