Similar problem here (up to date Dapper):

1) start RB : works fine
2) close it, GUI disappears...
3) ... but the RB process is STILL running

If I (try to!) start it from the command line with the "debug" option (rhythmbox
-d), it prints the following:

Killing all running RB processes by hand allows it to be restarted successfully
again.
