I verified that UTF-8 or other non-ASCII characters in devices labels lead to a
garbled display, but that should not prevent g-v-m from mounting the device at
all. Can you please do the steps oh

I will try to teach hal about UTF-8 in device labels. That will still break with
other encodings, but I guess UTF-8 is a sane default.
