I can confirm roughly this behaviour in Serpentine 0.6.3 in Ubuntu 5.10; it appears to burn fine, claims to have succeeded, 
and ejects a CD that appears, to the rest of Gnome, to be blank...

Using the same .flac files, the same CD burner, and CD-Rs from the same stock of blanks, K3B burns usable audio CDs. 

I've wasted a number of CD-Rs trying different burnings speeds in Serpentine, from 32x all the way down to 4x, and they ALL 
fail to produce an actual audio CD.

I might try the backported 0.6.4 - or I might just keep using k3b, despite it's awful KDE UI...
