the backtrace has a:
"(gedit:28825): XML-CRITICAL **: Input is not proper UTF-8, indicate encoding !
Bytes: 0xE4 0x68 0x64 0x65"

Could you run "md5sum /usr/share/gedit-2/ui/gedit-ui.xml" and copy that to a
comment? What locale to you use?
