This bug is gone for me. Let me explain:

I had a Colony 3 install (up to date with the repository) and I was having the
problems described here. Last weekend I had to replace that install with a rock
solid stable system (hello hoary :), and I've been using it since then.
Yesterday I upgraded to breezy and the problems described are gone.

I'll do a fresh Colony 3 install next weekend, but this bug can probably be closed.
