This usually happens if the current sound device cannot be opened because it is
busy. In particular this is the case for devices which are not supported by dmix.
Right now, gnome-sound-properties detects the current card by opening the
default alsa device and looking at its card number. However, this can be
improved by looking at ~/.asoundrc instead and assuming card "0" if the file is
not present.
