@Jelmer:  I had a look at the branches of bzr on launchpad.net and
didn't see one of yours with 248333 or 'permissions' in the name.  Is
the branch you refer to on launchpad?  If so, what is it named?  If
not, do you still have access to that code?  Would you be willing to
resurrect this branch?

This looks like a nasty usability problem for some users that with
some coding effort could "Just work."  You made some good suggestions
for directions toward a solution in the bug report that make it sound
like the coding effort should be moderate to minimal if someone were
able to start from your branch.
