That was the test I needed.  Hadn't realized that I needed to check the ssh comms; thoug that bzr's output would 'tell me' more clearly.  Noted for future ref.

Found a non-ascii garbage character in the IdentityFile path in ssh_config for *.launchpad.net -- on multiple machines.

No idea how that crept in :-/

Anyway, all fixed.
