I've switched to homebrew long time ago, and never looked back. The
advantage is that if something requires, say, python 2.7, and system
already provides it, then it does not try to compile its own version of
python, but uses the one provided with the system.
That, and by default it encourages installation in such a way that you
essentially never use root privileges.
