The biggest thing about MemoryTree is that it extracts the whole
content of the revision into memory. Which works just fine for quick
hacks and our test suite, but is obviously not great on real stuff.

Something like TransformPreview where only the modified state is held
in memory is certainly the way to go. I think we'd also accept patches
to make it easier to use.

I think TreeTransforms are very powerful, but it often is clumsy to do
simple things.
