BigString (reducing peak memory)

That's pretty much what I'm heading for. I don't think that BigString will
be a magic bullet, but it may help make some of the changes. Brad Horowitz,
quoting someone else: "we just need lots of lead bullets." Basically I'm
just running under a tight vm ulimit, seeing where it fails, and pulling
the thread. I'll ping you tomorrow when I'm back at work, and explain where
I'm going to on the bug.
