It also gives you the opportunity to have a hierarchy of branches. So
repo/2.0 can be the 2.0 release branch and repo/2.0/feature could be a
branch targetted at 2.0. We had a thread a while back about removing it, but
some people did like using it. (I like the idea, but don't actively use it
myself)
It is confusing if you have a working tree there, since it mixes branches
with files. Though as mentioned you can create meta projects if you put
libraries, etc into subdirs.
