Can "bzr annotate" be sped up?

FWIW, I don't care about "bzr annotate" so much as I care about getting
the log&diff for the specified line-range (currently, I get this info
with the help of "bzr annotate", but I'd much rather get it directly).

I've learned to hate "annotate" because it seems that people have
growned so used to it that they end up thinking it's "what they need"
rather than "what they have".
