Excellent question, I'm glad you asked :D

Since 2.2.2 is a stable release, new plugins releases should be taken
into account if and only if they have been explicitely announced as
compatible with 2.2 (derived from doc/developers/cycle.txt). 

I didn't heard about such plugins releases myself, but Gary or Alexander
may know better for qbzr which *is* maintaining a series targeted at
2.2.

If in doubt, keep the versions used in 2.2.1 and wait for feedback from
plugin authors or users, keeping in mind that people that want new
features but don't want to run from sources are encouraged to migrate to
the betas (it's stability XOR features).
