Bazaar Installation Problem on Debian Lenny 5.0.5 (amd64)

I have installed Python version 2.7 from a released tarball source
package.  The installation puts the configuration Makefile in
directory:

  /usr/local/lib64/pythoion2.7/config

but bazaar 2.2.0 looks for it in
'
  /usr/local/lib/pythoion2.7/config

I have posted the problem on the python site awaiting a response, but
I still need a solution.

I can kludge a fix I think, but is there a known work around or bug
fix in the works that anyone knows about?
