I'm a huge fan of udd/bzr-builddeb and have been trying to use it for
basically all of my packaging work. This includes packages I work on as part
of my job on the Ubuntu Platform Foundations team, and as an upstream software
developer trying to package my own stuff for Debian, Ubuntu, and PPAs.

One caveat though: my own stuff is almost always Python-based, but I've worked
on various other types of packages for work.

The place to start, and to help improve, is the wiki:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DistributedDevelopment/Documentation

I'm always trying to add or edit these pages as I figure something else out
(with much help from James W and many others on this list).

There's also decent information on your file system:

/usr/share/doc/bzr-builddeb/user_manual/

I wrote the following blog post about my experience Debianizing existing
Python packages back in May:

Please read the comments on that post, as there is updated information
provided.
