The murky world of CVS -> (Bazaar|Mercurial|Git)

I seem to be able to generate dumpfiles from CVS modules quite easily
with cvs2bzr (*). Git manages to do a fast-import into an empty
repository from the 300MB dumpfile in a few seconds. bzr fast-import
appears to take 30-40 minutes to create the shared repository with all
the branches.
Should there really be this huge difference in performance?
(*) Is there actually a difference between cvs2bzr and cvs2git? Git
seems to be able to fast-import quite happily from a dumpfile generated
with cvs2bzr.
