Running the tests causes the python process to crash. The crash dialog
shows this:

I tried using pdb, but the same thing happened and no backtrace.

I used MS Visual C++ 2008 (i.e. version 9.0) configured with its
vcvars32 script to build the project. I haven't had any trouble building
other python extensions with it.
