git can add nodes now; it has an additional relationship in the graph to
replace a node and thus replace the relationships it holds.
That said, please dig up my call-to-arms on history editing: there are
important uses for multiple styles of history editing, and an attempt to
start categorising them that may be of use in this conversation.
