Do you happen to be working on a FAT filesystem?

I'll agree this is strange behavior, I don't have a good answer beyond
that. It would be nice if the os gave us *what* file or directory didn't
exist. (Is the parent of the limbo location missing, is it unable to
create the final name for some reason, does it require that symlinks
target a real file?)
