If that local checkout is of '.', then is is precisely equivalent to a
heavyweight checkout - unless we explicitly prohibit that, which would
be an odd thing for us to do.
What is certainly possible is to remove commit --local, or something
along those lines. 'Update' will still need to be available for bound
branches, as *there is no other command* to perform the same
sync-and-pivot logic.
