How to get rid of ghost revisions

Is there a way to get rid of ghost revisions?
It's really frustrating not being able to diff, shelve, etc when they're 
there.
I'm about to write a script to append a newline to all my files, commit, 
then merge the previous revision and commit to undo so that I'll at 
least have an horizon from where everything should be working again.

Is there a better solution?
