I wouldn't necessarily be working inside a shared repo, though.  I
suspect that I would actually prefer being outside the repo in several
use cases.

This is a one-time cost per "colocated" workspace, though.  After that
you use "bzr switch", which knows how to DTRT for both kinds of
checkout.
