I don't have any specific comments so far, but I want to note that this 
idea discussed not first time, and I think it worth implementing per se.

In my latest work project I've started implementing "features" when 
external devices can be queried about functions and features they 
supports and provides instead of doing just hard-wired check based on 
version number of device's firmware. This is huge step forward for me.
So let's me say this in support of your proposal:

version numbers must die, features set is forever!
