I did not use --parallel.  At least not on purpose.  The exact command lines
were of the form

  bzr --no-plugins selftest [--exclude="<regexp>"] -v

where I started with no --exclude option and gradually added --exclude
patterns to get as many tests to run as possible.

If bzr or python is autodetecting dual cores and running in parallel without
my permission, that could explain a lot.
