Certainly I've had much better success explaining the concept when I can
refer to people's existing understanding of a Subversion checkout. The
whole “bound branch” thing is foreign and doesn't help these people;
understanding almost always involves “Oh, you mean like a checkout?
Well why didn't you say that then!”.
