[MERGE] prepare for CHKInventory in memorytree/mutabletree (brisbane)

This is rev3838 from brisbane-core. Vincent needed to
introduce this to get the test suite passing after
CHKInventories were introduced. They may be other ways
of solving the issue but this works (and the introduced
method is private).

I'm putting this up for review separately because it's
an isolated change that removes 2 modified files off
my list of differences between bzr.dev & brisbane-core.
