[MERGE] make ls non-recursive by default

non-recursive by defaults makes a lot of sense to me too; it makes the 
command not as overwhelming on large trees and consistent with "normal" 
ls and e.g. svn ls.

my main worry with this would also be that there might be scripts that 
rely on the current behaviour; there's not much we can do about that 
though, except for announcing it well. Perhaps we should land this early 
in the 1.15 cycle?
