discussed on IRC; we should not be unconditionally calling 
getpass.getpass() as it will raise an exception if there's no active 
terminal. instead, we could perhaps just read from sys.stdin if there's 
no terminal rather than calling getpass (since there's no need to turn 
of echoeing, either).
